Marine Corps War Memorial

Better known as the Iwo Jima Memorial (in Arlington, Virginia)

This memorial depicts the historic photograph taken by Joe Rosenthal of a large U.S. flag (96″ x 56″) being raised atop Mount Suribachi (the dormant volcano on the southern tip of the Iwo Jima island) after it was captured on February 23, 1945. Six men (Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley , Michael Strank , John Bradley, Rene Gagnon and Harlon Block ) are forever immortalized.

= were later killed during the battle
