My Christmas Giveaway…….your $25 gift card choices are:

  • Barnes & Noble - sometimes nothin’ beats curling up with a good book
  • Ebay - bid! bid! bid!
  • Best Buy - thee place for gadgets
  • Starbucks - mmmm, fill ‘er up, please!
  • American Express - never leave home without it!

To enter drawing, answer these 2 questions in the “Post a Comment” section below:

  1. What’s your most memorable Christmas gift?
  2. Which gift card you’d like to receive if you’re the winner: Barnes & Noble, Ebay, Best Buy, Starbucks, or American Express

What stands out as my best Christmas gift ever is Electronic Battleship.  I was good that year.  And it’s not like my brothers and I went lacking with games either.  In fact, we had a closet-full (okay, half a closet…the other half was for our jackets) collected over the years: Monopoly, Chess, Checkers, Dominoes, Mah-jongg, Risk, Backgammon, Parcheesi, Pick-up Stix, playing cards, Bingo, Jax, Operation, Jenga, Chinese Checkers, Pictionary (also a Ping Pong table and a Basketball Hoop mounted over the garage!)…and those are the ones I can remember!  I think I liked Electronic Battleship so much because of the cool sound effects! I’m wEiRd like that. Thank you Santa! :-)

Drawing will close on Monday, December 8th @ 9pm PST. One entry per person, please. One winner will be chosen at random (not based on responses) using Random Integer Generator and will be announced Tuesday morning.

If you’d like to be notified of my giveaways, send an email to subscribe [at] yummies4tummies [dot] com

My fine print: Your entries will be used for entertainment purposes only! I will never ever share your private info with others. Winner has 48 hours to respond to my notification, otherwise a new winner will be drawn.

The winner is Clara!!! Please check your email. You’ll have to decide which one you & hubby want more–AMEX or Best Buy.

There were two late entrants, and while I normally wouldn’t count their entry, this is a Christmas giveaway, and I’m no Scrooge.

I loved reading everyone’s most memorable gift..and in some instances, I was close to tears (the good kind). A number of you got engaged or received a puppy! Aww! It’s so great that a lot of you recall the sentimental gifts from your childhood. :-)

I’m thinking my next giveaway will be books.  I’m still contemplating though…

Thank you all for participating…and I hope everyone’s having an exquisite holiday season!

UPDATE: A boo-boo on my part! In my expeditious efforts of deleting spam comments, I accidentally deleted the last dozen or so comments of this post. Oopsie!

  2. This may not be my most memorable, but it is my first memory of a gift at Christmas (and the first that came to mind). When I was about 7 or 8 my brother and I both got Sesame Street slippers… One was Cookie Monster and one was Big Bird. I honestly dont remember who got which ones, but I remember we LOVED those things!

How romantic. Now some 14 years and a few kids later, I still cherish that gift of his love. Thanks so much and please enter me for the American Express Gift card. Happy Holidays.

  16. my most memorable christmas gift was when I was about 8 or 9 and my parents got me a pair of ice skates. my dad then brought us out in the back yard and pulled back a tarp–and he had made us a “skating rink”. It was lumpy and bumpy and slanted, but we spent hours out there laughing and skating and enjoying time together!

  37. My most memorable Christmas gift was a set of photo stamps from my sister of our companion animal, Sasha (a kitty), who had died that year. Man, that sounds like a downer, but it really was a great gift.

I would choose the American Express card. (Though I was taught not to look a gift horse in the mouth, so, in reality, I’d take any of them.)

  38. One of my favorite things (that I don’t even remember getting!) is a beaded Santa boot ornament one of my mom’s friends made for me when I was a toddler. I love hunting for it in the ornaments every year and then putting it on the tree.

First choice would be the Barnes and Noble gift card.

  39. My favorite gifts every year from about 9yo through my teens were the reference books my parents would buy me. Seriously, I got a dictionary one year, an atlas another year, one year they went big time and got me the 5-volume set of the pictorial history of the Civil War. I was such a total book nerd. I still am! - which is why I would choose the B&N card. :)

  40. My most memorable gift was an LP of the Wizard of Oz soundtrack — memorable because I’d asked for ac/dc “back in black” instead, and WoO was like the anti-ac/dc.

If I win, I’d prefer the AmEx card as first choice, Ebay 2nd, and Starbucks 3rd.

  42. The most memorable Christmas present I’ve ever gotten was the engagement ring my husband gave to me right before Christmas. A close second would be these scary little plastic santa heads that my grandma got me one year. I have no idea who would want disembodied Santa heads . . . anyway they were memorable in an odd way.

I would like the Barnes & Noble gift certificate if I win.

  43. The most memorable Christmas gift I’ve ever received is a trip to the Bahamas from my husband (before we were married). I think I would like any of those gift cards, except Starbucks because I don’t drink coffee. If I had to choose just one, I would go with the American Express card. It would be most versatile.

    Thanks for the awesome giveaway!!

I was so young. I’m not blind by the way, that’s just a patch over one of my eyes because my other eye was weak.

I’m all about the American Express card, but I’d be happy with any of them.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

  48. My most memorable gift was the stereo my parents gave me in 9th grade. We opened all our presents and I didn’t get anything “big”, but my bro and sis did. I was really disappointed and then my dad says that not all of the gifts are open. I start looking under the tree but I don’t see anything. My dad is just chuckling to himself and giving me hints, and finally I find this big box sitting in plain site, not wrapped, totally says there is a stereo in it, etc. We had recently moved to this house and so there was still a stack of unpacked boxes in the living room and apparently my present had been sitting in plain sight for weeks and I never noticed. I still have that same stereo for about 13 years and it still works!

    I’d love the B&N gift card :)

  51. My most memorable Christmas giftS are the handmade angel ornaments from Europe that my grandmother bought for me and my sister. She had bought several of them for each of us, one for each Christmas for years to come. After she died, for years she continued to give us angels for Christmas. They ARE MY MOST Treasured ornaments and are quadruple wrapped! They mean everything to me at Christmas.

I’d love either the Best Buy or AmEx, in the event that I am luck enough to win.

  63. It wasn’t actually my Christmas gift that I remember so well, it was my younger sister’s. She got a “Jodie” doll and it came with a “house” (it actually was just a big kitchen. I can still remember the song they used to advertise for that doll “Jodie, Oh Jodie, she’s a country girl doll. Sweet, pretty Jodie, the country girl doll”. It came with these little cast iron pots and pans and a little cat figurine. My sister and I played with Jodie all the time.

I’d file my papers from school, and I’d sit there and color and pretend I was working in an office. I had sections with crayons, pencils, notebooks, and I loved it! Still using the cabinet, but have worn out that machine and 2 others since then! Would pick the Starbucks card, since would immediately regift it to my daughter!

  83. My most memorable gift? The year I found my Christmas gifts, and I knew what I was getting, and I didn’t like what I was getting. I was about 7 and I tried really hard to fake it, but I must have gone overboard because my mom knew immediately that I knew what I was getting ahead of time.

I would love the Barnes and Noble card.

  84. Amazing. My most memorable gift was HILARIOUS! My aunt and uncle who live in small town MO gifted their city girl nieces with these terrible (but hilarious) hoodies. Mine was a HUGE black one with sparkly pink writing that had had this hilariously cheesy phrase with no rhythm or rhyme. Maybe they got it in a giveaway and thought it would work for us. We laughed real hard. It’s the thought that counts, right?

    I love the Bucks!

  89. 1.) What’s your most memorable Christmas gift?

My Love-A-Lot Carebear that I got the Christmas I was 2. I’m 27 now, and still have her. She’s very worn, but has been very loved over the years. My little girls actually fight over who gets to sleep with her at night. LOL

2.) Which gift card you’d like to receive if you’re the winner: Barnes & Noble, Ebay, Best Buy, Starbucks, or American Express

I’d love to win the Starbucks or the Barnes & Noble card, though all of those would be great in their own way.

    Thanks for the entry!!!

  90. 1 - after we were married for just about a year, my husband took the tiny diamond from my wedding ring and had it set into a necklace, and he upgraded the diamond in the ring to a bigger one - since the original diamond was loose, I thought he’d just taken it to be fixed - I was SHOCKED on Christmas morning!

2 - I’d go for the AMEX card, since it is the most versatile.

    Thanks for the contest!

  115. My most memorable Christmas gift was given to me a few years back by my son. I have memories of my 2nd grade teacher reading a book to us entitled “Sunny Elephant” and had searched every used book store and online sites to no avail. I had talked about this with family, never thinking that anyone was actually paying attention. Then a few years back my 20+ yr old son surprised me with a copy of it for Christmas. He had kept that mental note of a conversation that took place years ago. The book was nothing compared to his hunting it down and giving it to me. I’d have to go with the Barnes & Noble gift card!

  122. The Christmas gift that is most memorable to me was when I was about 4. I had asked for “a stove,”stink” and fridge-rater”. My parents got me a perfect just right little girl’s size set complete with pots, pans, and even little food that went in the fridge. Oh, I just had fun with that for YEARS. A few years later, my dad and grandfather (who was a carpenter) even made me a little playhouse in the backyard and I just had SO much fun pretending it was my own little cottage…Can you tell I was spoiled…LOL??

  159. My most memorable Christmas has to be when I was a little one and had gotten an Easy Bake Oven! That is what sparked my interest in cooking. It’s still pretty clear: the morning after, my older cousin woke me up early, and the two of us made several things, but only after locking the basement door so all of the guys (cousins and brothers) couldn’t come upstairs. we ate every last cookie and cake all by ourselves!

Now what makes this such a memory is that at the age of 8, I was wearing a size 9 shoe (okay so my feet and nose grew first and I’m still waiting for my chest to catch up!), so those size 9 Go-Go boots were a sight for sore eyes!!! Yikes!!! I was so happy, I never noticed I looked like I was wearing snow shoes!!

  163. My Nana passed away just shortly before Christmas 2005. My uncle still hadher saying, “Merry Christmas. I love you.” on his answering machine from the year before. The next year, 2006, I called and listened to it. It was amazing hearing her voice again and the best present I could ever ask for.

    As always, I’d choose Starbucks.

  175. Let’s see, most memorable gift would have to be the discman I got in 6th grade. Dad hid it in the bookshelf so I thought all my gifts were unwrapped (a la A CHRISTMAS STORY). But then I saw it peeking out, and I was so thrilled! We drove to FL from NC every year to see my grandparents, so having that baby in the car to drown out my parents was KEY.

I’d love the Starbucks card because I can never justify buying those coffees myself. When I have a gift card, though, look out! Grande Mocha Frappuccino please!

  178. My most memorable Christmas gift (or one of them at least) was the year my grandmother gave me a coupon good for one day with her and two activities to do together–one sewing and one cooking. I chose making a fabric wreath and maple doughnuts. I LOVED that gift. So great. She did that for all of us grandkids, and also managed to make little stuffed muslin dolls with yarn hair that looked like us. Best gifts that year, hands down. :-)

    Other ?–Barnes and Noble.

When I was 6. I wanted a Chrissy doll and I knew my chances of getting it were very slim. My parents had just gone through a divorce and times were very tough. When I was done opening all of my presents on Christmas morning I didn’t have my doll. I was ok but disappointed. 196. THE most memorable Christmas gift I ever received was from my Dad. One year he gave me a wooden ladder. He didn’t wrap it, but he did put a bow on it! I hadn’t asked for one, or even hinted, but I really needed it — my apartment had 12-foot ceilings and it was really hard to change light bulbs. I’ve had that ladder for over 20 years now, and the bow only fell off with this last move. (Sniff.) I’m very sentimental about my ladder, but people just think I’m weird!

    Hmmm………
I don’t know how old I was, maybe around 9? My mom got me a little Christmas music box. I still put it out every year and think about her, what our lives were like then and what they are like now.

Any would be great, but the BestBuy one would be the best. We’re (I mean the kids) are getting a Wii for Christmas and I imagine we will be buying stuff for it.

  210. My most memorable Christmas gift would have to be a gift card my brother sent me in the mail 2 years ago. It was not the card that mattered, but who sent it because my brother was way out in Iraq fighting in the war and had been out of touch for a few months. Being out of touch for a while is common due to the fighting and having to be careful with coorespondence. But he had been out of touch so long I started to worry that something bad had happened. Then just before Christmas, I got his card in the mail. I started crying when I got it. I liked the card but loved knowing that my brother was okay and well even more.

  215. My most memorable gift is the Tiffany’s necklace and bracelet my husband gave me. I had told him I wanted them, but never in a million years did I expect him to get them for me! I even bought myself a purse I really wanted and wrapped it up, because I figured I’d be a little disappointed that Christmas! He actually took the Tiffany’s boxes (inside their Tiffany’s bags) to Dillard’s to be wrapped in a larger box with Dillard’s wrapping paper to throw me off. It worked!

I’d love the American Express gift card. I’d give it to him so he could buy something he really wants, but hasn’t told me about!

  220. One year for Christmas my dad got my sister and I tool sets. He worked at Sears and was appalled to overhear us discussing at Thanksgiving that we both had purchased items that said “no tools needed” only to find out that they did require screwdrivers, which neither of us owned! No daughter of his shouldn’t own a screwdriver. Now we do - plus wrenches, hammers, pliers, drills, and other items I don’t know what to do with. I have used these tools A LOT over the years and it always gives me a chuckle. Now my husband uses them, too!

I would like a Barnes and Noble card. I’d spend it all on children’s books and donate them to the book driver our local store is having throughout the holidays.

I never dreamed she would eventually be mine, so that Christmas morning when she was under the tree, I remember crying because I was so happy. (My parents later told me she had been kept in the basement until the special day almost in plain site. They couldn’t believe I never stumbled onto her hiding there.)
Thanks again Mom and Dad for a Christmas to remember.

Definitely Barnes & Noble. I’d use it to get books for my classrooom.

  253. From all of my other Christmas gifts over the years, my most memorable and favorite gift given to me was a doll. The doll had blue eyes and thick black hair. It wore a white, frilly dress and hat. It was a present given to me by my aunt. I was never the type to like dolls; their eyes have always freaked me out. Back then, when I was seven, I thought why in the world would she give me a doll? But I soon learned that she loved me, but couldn’t figure out a way to show that, so she gave me the doll. She spent several months saving money to buy it for me. I have never opened the doll, because I fear that I would break it, since I was really clumsy (and still am >.<). It was so precious to me. Today, I still have that doll. In my closet, the doll is gathering dust. But I would take it out on days that I am not in my best. From just looking at it, I remember the memories of great times I had with my aunt. And yes, I have gotten over my fear of a doll’s eyes.

I would like the Barnes and Noble Gift Card, please.

  269. My most memorable Christmas gift wasn’t actually a gift that you could hold. It was a gift of learning the lesson of helping and sharing. When I was about 6 years old, my parents decided that my sisters and I should donate at least one of our presents to give to a family who didn’t have much to give to their children. We were at first shocked that we would have to give away one of our new presents that we hadn’t even played with yet. My parents sat up down and told us about gifts from the heart. Needless to say, we each gave up 2 of our presents and went with our parents to drop them off to the family. Just seeing their faces when they got their gifts is something that I won’t ever forget.
I would be thrilled with any of these great gift cards but would prefer the American Express or Ebay card the most.
Thank you for the nice giveaway and for reminding me of days gone by.

  270. My most memorable gift was a sled. I was the youngest in a large family and I never had a new sled for myself. My parents thought it was a dumb choice, and it was all I wanted that year. Normally it doesn’t snow that much near Christmas in NJ and it was even predicted to be a mild winter. Well…guess what… Christmas Eve brought, SNOW. and True to my dad’s word he took me sledding the first time it snowed after I got it.So I got to sled on Christmas Day!– As an adult I would enjoy the practicality of the AMEX gift card as I could use it anywhere I wished vs. a specific store or website (although the bay one is incredibly tempting too). This is one great offer, and recipes, YAY,.. I cook when i visit my friends houses. Even the ones who never eat treats beg me to bring some along. Thanks for your holiday generosity and great recipes.

I learned to ride alright, and also fall off in several different ways as he was a tricky little guy.

  292. I would pick the eBay :-)

My most memorable gift was a stuffed animal. A large Unicorn. It was 1983 and I was 13 years old.

Two days prior to Christmas, I walked into the garage looking for some clean socks. There was a Unicorn lying on the garage floor. I knew it was for me. I picked it up, brushed it off and put it back on the bench it was lying beside.

That evening, my mother asked me if I had seen my present. I knew how sick she was and I didn’t want to disappoint her by ruining her surprise so I lied and said, “No.” My mom always knew when I was lying! She told me she had been in a hurry and saw that the unicorn had fallen to the floor but didn’t have time to pick it back up. She knew I must have placed it back on that bench.

When I admitted I had seen the Unicorn my mom asked me if I would help her wrap the other presents for my siblings. My mom and I wrapped together that year. That time spent together remains so precious to me. My beautiful mother died of breast cancer three months later.

  336. My most memorable Christmas was way back when I was pre-teen. I thought Christmas was going to be totally ruined. There was seven of us living in a three bedroom single wide trailer. My cousin got sick on Christmas Eve and we just knew she had a stomach bug because just a few minutes after she started throwing up my sister was sick too. I knew without a doubt my turn was coming. I waited … and waited … and waited but I never got sick and neither did anyone else in our house. We woke up on Christmas morning and it was as if no one had ever been sick. Later that day my Aunt discovered these empty chocolate covered cherry boxes. Turns out that my cousin and my sister had gotten into my Aunts ’stash’ of candy and had devoured it all and that is what made them sick. I was spared!
If I were to win this giveaway I would like the American Express gift card.

  338. Sitting on the beach at sunrise with my new (one month old) daughter, my sweet husband , and brand new puppy on Christmas morning in Fort Lauderdale, is my happiest Christmas memory. I can remember that day like it was yesterday, and I can still picture it in my mind like a photograph. It didn’t matter that we had no money for fancy decorations, or presents. Instead we had our lives ahead, and beautiful beginnings.

  341. My most memorable gift was probably a hair dryer. I was a teen and we were in bad shape financially so I didn’t expect anything, but mom got me a blow dryer that I really needed (my hair was really long and it took forever to dry). It lasted for YEARS! I’d love the Amex card. Thanks for the giveaway!

  342. My most memorable Christmas gift was given to me by my grandmother when I was 21 years old (I am 29 now). It was a large rectangular tablecloth that she has embroiderd a beautiful Greek Key Design around the entire border of the tablecloth (she is 100% Greek). This was the most beautiful gift anyone could have given me. It was especially meaningful to me because my grandmother was suffering from very painful arthritis in her hands and in spite of it she worked her little hands embroidering this tablecloth for me so I would always have it in my home to remember her by. Oh my gosh, I am starting to cry as I am typing. I still have it in my home and cherish it each and every day! My grandmother died a few years later so it was the last gift from her that I received and it is priceless to me. I would choose the Ebay or American Express GC but I would be happy to have any one of them really! Thank you so much for letting me share my story and for the opportunity to enter.

  354. It was the year of my purple phase. I was in the 7th grade and asked that any gift that I received had to be purple. My friends and relatives humored me, and it was like Barney had exploded in our living room. I had purple up the wazoo, and I was one very satisfied teenager.
If I win, I’d like the Barnes and Noble gift card, thanks.
